Taking action at 67 and doing it at 100
If you pick up a new activity, can you keep on doing it? Ida Keeling sure did! Ida Keeling started track running at 67 years. Running was suggested by her daughter to help her mother overcome the loss of two sons. Ida picked up running and just stuck to it. Even up to the age of 103 she kept on running. She broke track records and published a book: “can’t nothing bring me down“. Furthermore, she picked up sports beyond 60 and has become famous for simply doing her thing. She clearly is a Flamboyant Grays role model !
Breaking Records at any age
Ida Keeling took up running. This means she took up sports, which is seen as something especially suited for young people, less for older people. While this seemed unexplored territory, again a secret role model emerges when digging through the internet. Ida Keeling even broke records while in her 100s. So, I guess there is no age restriction on starting a new project and lifting it to new heights.
Track Running Giving meaning to life
Before Ida started track running at 67, she was at the end of her wits. She had just lost a second child, and Ida felt that her life did not matter anymore. Her daughter felt she had to step in and change that mindset.
So, this new activity was based on renewing hope, revitalizing life by action. For me, engaging in a new activity adds to the meaning of life. The action itself is adding to the quality of life, and that relates to ‘can’t nothing bring me down’.
